Road 96: OneAngryGamer Honest Review

The events of Road 96 take place during the summer of 1996. An unnamed nation in the United States of America dubbed Petria is the setting for the film, a desolate landscape punctuated by an extensive network of roads flanked with dilapidated fast food joints and drive-ins. The most frequently watched news source is a so-called “independent” television network, simply a front for the corrupt government.

The ringleader is a jerk with a terrible haircut and a tacky suit that nonetheless seems to be costly. Played as seven different teenagers for eight hours, three of whom crossed the border, two of whom got in trouble, and one of whom was shot and ended up joining the revolution. When you start a “run,” you will notice how far away the border is in miles. This is a unit of distance utilized by just three IRL nations, including the United States. After each scene, you must select how you will get to the following scenario, whether you will hitchhike, hail a taxi, wait for a bus, or stroll down the roadside.

Overlays of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” over mountains and a meandering road at night in Road 96 appear as the title screen’s background. Every stop in the pit lane is a scene from a story. The stories of all the characters progress in a significant way. The anticipation of seeing who I would run across next and where their narrative would lead was one of the most thrilling aspects of Road 96 for me.
